Q:Do you think your water bill is high and don’t know the reason why? Please check the following in your home.

A:1. Running toilet can use 2 to 3 gallons of water per minute or 120 gallons per hour and a 24 hour period amounts to over 3,000 gallons per day.

2. If you have a water softener and the control valve would stick open this will use 1 to 2 gallons per minute.

3. If you have a humidifier on your furnace and the control valve would stick open this will use 1 to 2 gallons of water per minute. Daily and weekly periodic maintenance checks in these areas will conserve water and prevent high water bills.

Q:I seem to be having problems with calcium deposits on my showers, faucets, hot water heater, and appliances. Is this an issue in the area? What can be done to resolve this? Do I need to install a whole house softener or purifier?

A:There are a number of mineral compounds found in the water that could cause the deposits you are seeing, calcium being just one of them. The Jefferson Water and Sewer District supplies water from 5 raw water wells located within the district. Well water is naturally high in mineral content. These minerals are what cause the water to be considered hard. We soften the water from approximately 527 milligrams per liter (equivalent to 30.8 grains per gallon) of hardness in the raw water, down to approximately 130 milligrams per liter (equivalent to 7.6 grains per gallon ) of hardness in the finished water. According to information located on the Ohio Consumer Counsel’s website www.pickocc.org, water that is too soft will become aggressive, causing corrosion to our distribution system, as well as leaching lead and copper from a homeowner's service lines, plumbing and fixtures.

The problem you are seeing on your fixtures and appliances is known as scaling, which is formed by calcium, lime, and other mineral deposits. This scaling can be removed by several different types of household cleaners, such as CLR, Lime-Away, or distilled white vinegar. Scaling problems are intensified by hot water as heating the water tends to disassociate the minerals from the water, so lowering the thermostat on your hot water heater may help to reduce the problem you are experiencing. Installing a home softener and/or filtration unit may remove more of the minerals causing the scaling.
